Santa Fe Community College — In response to an ARRA grant to train insulation installers, Santa Fe Community College had a difficult problem to solve; How do you get men between the ages of 25 and 35, whose highest educational achievement was a high school diploma, pay attention in class? It’s a difficult problem any time, but this was exacerbated by having blended learning where some of the training was online and it was combined with live training in Santa Fe Community College classrooms and laboratories. To get their attention, we invented a character who didn’t pay attention in class and although he was nice and bright, he always screwed up on the job. Carlito, always messed up on the job. There were 41 lessons and 41 episodes that ran from 1:30 to just over 3 minutes. Each video segment had at least 3 learning objectives that were allied to both the live and the online classes each week.
